Numeracy

The resources and ideas on this page have been curated from a variety of sources and sites. They support the development of mathematical skills and the building of numeracy understanding across the grades. As we enter unfamiliar territory during a time of learning at home, more than ever there is a need to support each other with resources that target structures and routines that are familiar to both teachers and students.
Numeracy Blog
We know that learning will look different depending on the circumstances and dynamics of our community.  This is not a time for one size fits all, but rather it is a time to provide choice and flexibility for our learners and their families. It is a time when rather than looking back on this we can use it to move us forward and capture the need for our own professional development.
This page will be updated frequently. Please know these are only suggested resources with the hope of giving teachers some structures and strategies to support numeracy remotely. As well it is a place for me to highlight some reputable numeracy leaders and direct you to some of the amazing work they are doing ((notable websites).

Math at Home

  1. What does remote learning in math look like?
  2. How do I plan?
  3. What structures, strategies and supports can support equity for my learners and their families?
  4. What is my purpose? What are some different options?
It is worthwhile to consider asynchronous types of learning opportunities

Structures

  1. Plan with a goal in mind. Choose a focus on one big idea (ex: fluency with facts).
  2. Plan for your week rather than a day. This will allow families more flexibility for learning at home.
  3. Take a look at what you would consider essential or critical learning for the remainder of the school year.
  4. When planning your activities consider how you will be assessing this work or collecting evidence of your students’ learning.

Strategies

1. What routines are your students familiar with? (Ex: What could a number talk look like at home?)
2. Provide options such as choice boards or cross –curricular STEAM type activities that can be done over a few days.
3. If you are providing work packages consider:

Online Learning Supports

There are a number of websites that teachers could sign their students up for or that teachers could recommend parents sign their kids up for. Sometimes parents are looking for recommendations from teachers but we may not necessarily decide to sign up our whole class for. Below is a list of curated – made available by publishers to support online learning at home.

SumDog: Enjoy personalized math & spelling practice that students love. Engage your students with adaptive learning and multiplayer games with Sumdog.
Prodigy: Fun math practice for grades 1-8. Content adapts to each player. Every major math topic - more than 1500 skills are embedded into the game.
